Unit Instructions

For this unit you will be selecting and researching a holiday or observance that is celebrated in a particular culture by a particular group of people.  You will need to answer these questions about your selection:
  • When is your holiday celebrated?
  • What are the historical origins of your holiday?
  • Who celebrates your holiday? Which culture(s) or country(ies)?
  • How is your holiday celebrated?
  • Why should we (your audience) know about this holiday?

You will be taking notes either by Digital Note taking (on a Word doc.) or on note cards.  You will need to create a focus statement/thesis statement and an outline of your presentation.  In class, you will see an example of this project using the "Juneteenth" celebration from Texas that celebrates the end of slavery.  You will also need to create TWO Bibliographies of all the different sources (information and graphics) you used to complete your project.  The final assessment will be an oral presentation to the class on your holiday, using a Power Point presentation or a poster as a presentation aid.

Grades will be from three areas:

1)  Daily On-Task Behaviors,

2)  Completing two separate bibliographies - one for the information and one for the graphics used (use NoodleTools to create Noodle Bibs),

and 3) the presentation itself using the Oral Presentation rubric.

This is a pre-Benchmark practice and will be completed in about 10 class periods.  The work can/will be completed in class and as homework.  You will need to be ready to present your holiday on TBA.
