Write a short paragraph in 15 minutes:
1. Use these five words in a paragraph.
(The paragraph should have a least FOUR sentences, but no more than ten.)
Use a variety of types of sentences.
dirty
brother sick ran
kitchen
You may change the tense of the word “ran.”
2. Does your paragraph have a focus sentence
or topic
sentence?
It can be the first sentence to immediately inform the
reader.
It can be the second sentence if you have a hook in the
first sentence.
It can be the last sentence if you want to give details and
lead the reader to the final sentence.
3. Descriptive words:
Adjectives (describes nouns)
Adverbs (describes verbs)
Revise for content (change ideas for clarity)
Edit for spelling and grammar (Like a DOL)
4. Sentence Fluency:
If a paragraph of all simple sentences is boring, why write
with them?
Simple, compound, complex sentences!
Revise for a mixture of sentence types
5. Edit (DOL style) for spelling, grammar,
etc.
6. Assignment: Rewrite paragraph for tomorrow (Monday)
(Turn in old and new versions!)
